Roger Dale Smothers, 68, of Poplar Bluff died Nov. 15.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Barbara Smothers (Chaffin); daughter, Carrie Franklin (Chris); son, Justin Smothers; and grandson, Riley Smothers. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Smothers; father, Bartley Smothers; and mother, Retha Smothers (Wheelis).

Roger was born Jan. 22, 1952 in Poplar Bluff and graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1970. He joined the Army National Guard in 1971 and retired 23 years later. He and Barbara married Nov. 19, 1971. Roger liked to stay busy, so while working as a parts salesman and serving in the National Guard, he also helped raise cattle on the family farm and was active in church. He and Barbara are long-time members of Living Word Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years.

A service will be held at Living Word Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Friends and family are invited to attend but asked to wear masks. Roger will be buried at the Missouri State Veteran Cemetery in Bloomfield.
