Nickey Orton was hostess for the Aug. 14 meeting of the Agee Community Club. The club met July 9 at Godfather’s Pizza, with Cathy Womack as the hostess.
Club president Cathy Womack opened both meetings with repeating the club motto, “When the heart is full of love the world is full of beauty.” Invocation was given by Nadine Johnson in August, and Michael Figgins in July. Devotional in August was from First Thessalonians Chapter 5, verses 16, 17, 18, in July was how many books, chapters and verses are in the Bible.
Secretary and treasurer’s report was read by Jeanie Figgins, plans were discussed for the club’s 88th anniversary in November and for Christmas.
Roll call was answered with who the members’ favorite and least favorite teachers were when they were in school.
Orton’s lesson in August was about Max Cleland, his military service, how he had lost two legs and one arm. He went to work in the VA system and later served as the youngest state senator, serving two terms from 1970-74. In 1975, he joined the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee staff to work on health care issues. The lesson in July related to cooking, including cake decorating and how to cook omelets.
The members traded magazines in August, and the Black River Times were passed out. Johnson read, “Looking for love”, and told about how to make angel food cake with only adding crushed pineapple.
Orton read, “Seven fruity facts.” Womack read, “How about that August heat?” Johnson read a poem from belated honorary club member Orel Smith’s book titled, “Summer Rain.”
Door prize was won by Womack.
In July, a poem was read by Orton from belated honorary club member Orel Smith’s book title, “My Flag”. The ladies had decorated white cowgirl hats and then voted on whose they liked the best. Johnson’s hat was the favorite as she was the only one who had decorated with flowers of red and white and she won $3.
Johnson will be the September hostess. The August meeting was dismissed by repeating the club collect, “Be still and know that I am God, Psalms 46:10.”
