JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Rep. Hardy Billington is applauding the decision by Governor Mike Parson to sign legislation affirming the State of Missouri’s continued support for its ally and trading partner around the world, Israel.

Billington stood in attendance as SB739 was signed July 13, allowing for the creation of the Anti-Discrimination Against Israel Act in Missouri.

“The United States, and the State of Missouri, have long stood as allies to our friends in Israel, and should continue to do so,” Billington, R-Poplar Bluff, said. “Israel has been our friend, ally, and trade partner, all while standing proudly as a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, and we should do all that we can to aid and ensure their protection.”

The new law prohibits public entities from entering into certain contracts with a company unless the contract includes a written certification that the company is not engaged, nor will engage, in a boycott of goods or services from Israel or any entity doing business with the State of Israel, according to a press release from Billington’s office. Any contract failing to comply shall be void against public policy. This act only applies to contracts with a total potential value of more than $100,000 or to contractors with more than 10 employees.

Billington says he has been a champion and co-sponsor of similar legislation during his time as a state representative, and applauds both Rep. Holly Rehder and Sen. Bob Onder for their efforts in carrying the legislation across the finish line during the 2020 legislative session.

With the governor’s signature, Missouri becomes the 29th state to pass anti-BDS (the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against Israel) legislation. The legislation is set to take effect on August 28.
