An apparent argument Thursday night between a Poplar Bluff father and his nephew left one dead and the other in jail.

At about 11:40 p.m., officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department were sent to a residence in the 1000 block of North Grand Avenue “in reference to a report that a person had been stabbed,” Capt. Dave Sutton said in a news release.

Upon their arrival, Sutton said, officers found Virgil Brown Sr., 50, laying on the floor inside the home.

“(He) had suffered a laceration to his chest,” Sutton said. “Officers rendered aid until the arrival of EMS.”

Brown was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead, Sutton said.

“Witnesses reported that during an argument, Terry Brown displayed a knife,” Sutton said. “Virgil Brown Sr. attempted to disarm (his nephew), and (his nephew) stabbed him.

Terry Brown, 28, was taken into custody at the residence on suspicion of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

The younger Brown was booked at the Butler County jail.
