All the rain lately has raised local lakes and rivers yet again.
I crossed the Current River at Van Buren the other day and it was up higher than I’ve seen it in a while.
The river crested there early Saturday at 15.34 feet and now is hovering around 8 feet. The current projection from the National Weather Service has it slowly falling to around 6 feet by Sunday.
At Doniphan, the Current River crested Saturday afternoon at 15.64 feet. It has since dropped a bit and is expected to fall to around 4.5 feet by Sunday.
The St. Francis River at Fisk reached a high point of 15.78 feet early Wednesday morning and now is slowly falling. Its current projection is to flatten out at 14 feet and stay there for several days.
Upstream, Wappapello Lake, as of Wednesday morning, was sitting at 364.94 feet, more than 10 feet above normal. The discharge from the dam was 7,000 cfs.
The Black River in Poplar Bluff was close to cresting Wednesday morning at around 12.91 feet, and the forecast is calling for it to drop only slightly to 11 feet by Sunday.
Clearwater Lake, as of Wednesday afternoon, was slowly rising and was at 522.99 feet, 29 feet above normal. Information on a possible crest date and level wasn’t available.
Birds Gobbling
Even with this crazy weather we’re having, turkeys are gobbling, so it’s a good time to get out and start listening if you can.
Don’t expect to run the roads and hear gobbling very long, because it’s only lasting about 10 minutes of you’re lucky.
Still, you might be able to pinpoint the location of a few birds.
More Postponements
A couple more outdoor-related events have been postponed, including a bass tournament and Ducks Unlimited banquet.
The Wappapello Bass Circuit’s event, scheduled for Saturday, will be rescheduled.
The Puxico Pintails/DU banquet, also on Saturday, will be rescheduled as well, and so far, a date had not been chosen.
