Tax season is a time scam artists try to separate individuals from refund money, but area senior citizens will have an opportunity to learn how to avoid the scammers’ fraudulent ways.
Whitney Quick with the Better Business Bureau will talk about fraud from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the Altrusa Room at the Twin Towers
RSVP Director Jennifer Rosener said, “We decided to start the seminars because we felt there were topics seniors would be interested in” learning about.
Fraud is the second in the RSVP three-part seminar series offered this year. The scheduled topics also included Medicare, which was offered during open enrollment, and the opioid crisis and seniors.
“There are so many scams that surround tax season and the IRS,” Rosener said. “I have already heard from several clients who have receive calls on this very subject this year.”
Rosener said, “every year, there is an IRS scam which changes a bit. Its important people remember an individual from the IRS will not be calling you. Never give out your personal or financial information.”
There is no limit on the amount of people who may attend the seminars. If you are interested in the fraud seminar, call the RSVP office at 686-8624 to register.
The third seminar is scheduled for June 24 and will be presented by SEMO Behavioral Health.
“We decided to start the seminars because we felt there were topics seniors would be interested in learning more about,” Rosener said.
