For the second consecutive night, the Poplar Bluff Police Department is investigating reports of shots having struck a home.

At about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, a homeowner in the 1900 block of Sanders Street reported hearing six shots, one of which struck her home, said police Lt. Josh Stewart.

The round “traveled through the exterior wall, into the homeowner’s bedroom, through an interior wall and lodged in a headboard in the next bedroom,” Stewart explained.

No one was injured.

“It does not appear that the victim’s residence was actually the target,” Stewart said.

Officers, he said, believe the shot “skipped off a tree and hit the house. … The bullet still had enough energy to go through an exterior wall and interior wall.

“It was heading that direction” when it hit the tree.

Stewart said it’s not known if “they were aiming at anything” or driving and popping off shots.

“Regardless of what their target was, they still hit that house,” Stewart said.

Officers, he said, received reports of a white SUV in the area.

“We’re not 100%” sure that is the suspect vehicle, but “when the shots were heard, that was the vehicle seen leaving the area,” Stewart said.

Officers, Stewart said, didn’t find any shell casings in the dark, but were “going back (Wednesday) morning in the daylight.

“I’m not sure if they’ve had any luck or not.”

Stewart said no witnesses have come forward about the shooting.

At this time, Stewart said, it is unknown whether the Sanders Street shooting is connected to one Monday night in the 800 block of Foley Street, where a home and two vehicles were struck.

It’s also unknown whether either shooting is connected to last week’s shootings at Bacon Park or on Wallace Street.

“All of these guys, honestly, the majority of those we suspect of being involved have previous criminal histories and should be in prison,” Stewart said.
