A Poplar Bluff man may face an assault charge after he allegedly stabbed another man Thursday night.

At about 6:10 p.m. Thursday, Poplar Bluff police officers responded to a residence in the 800 block of West Victor Street, where they contacted a 30-year-old man and the reporting party, Patrolman Dustin Barks wrote in his report.

Barks said he found the victim inside a camper on the property, and there was blood on the floor.

“(The victim) said he had been stabbed by Darien Russell,” Barks said. “He stated Darien came over to the residence, pulled out a knife and stabbed him and then left on foot.”

Barks said the victim was treated at the scene by emergency-medical-services personnel and then taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

The reporting party, Barks said, told him he was inside the camper when Russell came over.

“He said they were just talking, and after a few minutes, Darien pulled a knife from his pants, and he stabbed (the victim),” Barks said. “He said Darien left the camper southbound on foot.”

Barks said officers searched the area for the suspect, identified as Roderick Darien Russell, but were unable to find him.

At about 8:10 p.m., Patrolman Billie Duckett reportedly saw Russell walking in the area of Fifth and Oak streets.

Duckett, according to his report, contacted and arrested Russell, 24, on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Russell reportedly was told of his rights and asked about the assault.

“He stated he did not know anything about the assault,” Duckett said.

Russell subsequently was booked at the Butler County jail.

Further information, including the possible motive, is unknown at this time.
