Students with the Twin Rivers R-X school district are on their way home as the schools close early today.
The district announced schools would close at noon on Tuesday and remain closed on Wednesday.
Superintendent Jeremy Seibert said the closures are due to flooding and students out sick.
"We took those two factors into account and decided to close for a day and a half to hopefully get everything better to return to classes Thursday," he said.
Seibert said he drove around and noticed some flooding between the Black River bridge and Poplar Bluff. The district also includes several gravel roads that are prone to flooding.
On the sickness side, Seibert said about 90 students called out Tuesday due to the flu. The district has around 900 students in attendance on the average day.
The Butler County Health Department still has flu shots available for both adults and students.
Flu shots are free at the health department. The office at 1619 N. Main St. is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and walk-ins are accepted for the flu shot.
To avoid any kind of illness, health officials advise people regularly wash their hands, cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing and remain home if sick.
