Heart Smart: What You Need to Know about Cardiovascular Disease

Diabetes Self-Management Support Group: Community Safety

Southeast Diabetes Center hosts this free support group facilitated by Southeast’s Diabetes Educators. The programs are geared toward people who are living with diabetes and trying to control blood glucose. Friends and family members are also welcome. This month’s meeting will be from 1-2 p.m. on Feb.11 at HealthPoint Plaza in Cape.

This month SoutheastHEALTH Security Director Keith May will have a presentation on “Living Safe in Your Communitiy.” Register online or call the Southeast Diabetes Center at 573-339-0121 to take advantage of this free program.

Healthy Cooking: Delightfully Light

Join us at 6 p.m. on Feb. 17 for an evening of healthy indulgence. We will explain the different types of chocolate and their health benefits as well as preparing other tasty treats in lower calorie versions. Healthy Cooking classes at HealthPoint Fitness – Cape are taught by HealthPoint Nutritional Services Coordinator Raina Childers-Richmond, MS, RD, LD. Sibling Class Set for About to Be Big Brothers, Sisters

Sibling Class, scheduled from 5:30-7 p.m. Feb. 19, in the Harrison Room at Southeast Hospital, is designed to help children prepare, in a positive way, for the addition of a new family member.

The class includes an entertaining video, hands on experience with life size infant dolls, a tour of the OB unit, creating a special memento, and a tasty snack. ‘Tear Soup: A Recipe for Healing after Loss’

The SoutheastHEALTH Grief Support Group will meet from 1:30-3 p.m. on Feb. 19, at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape. Topic for this month’s meeting, led by Crystal Montgomery, LCSW, a bereavement counselor with Southeast Hospice, is “Tear Soup: A Recipe for Healing after Loss.” For more information about this support group, please call Southeast Hospice, 573-335-6208.

Heart Saver CPR Certification Class

This is an instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children and infants. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 20 at HealthPoint Fitness in Jackson.

This course teaches skills with the American Heart Association’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning skills.

The course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card for CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.

This class is not for healthcare providers seeking a BLS class. Cost of the class is $50 and includes a booklet.

Red wine and delicious chocolate – what a great pairing. Come see for yourself when the SoutheastHEALTH Ambassadors host a Red Wine and Chocolate Pairing from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 28, at Port Cape.

The antioxidants found in red wine and dark chocolate are considered beneficial to heart health, so what better way to kick off the SoutheastHEALTH Ambassadors’ HeartStrong campaign. HeartStrong provides smoking cessation programs, scales and pedometers to congestive heart failure patients, Automated External Defibrillators, CPR kits and training and also supports the Mended Hearts program.
