The Tinnin Art Gallery is featuring an exhibit of oil paintings by Three Rivers alumnus and local business owner Steve Whitworth. The exhibit will be on display at the Tinnin Art Gallery, inside the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers College campus, from January 24 through February 14.

Gallery hours are 12 to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Whitworth will give an artist lecture at noon January 24 in Room 108 of the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center. There will be a reception at the Tinnin Art Gallery from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 26. Admission is free to the exhibit, lecture, and reception.

Whitworth’s paintings feature a palette emulating the Technicolor of movies such as “Rear Window,” and structure and design inspired by Edward Hopper.

Whitworth loves to work with oil paint because it allows him to construct the image he’s trying to convey. He calls his finished works “frozen moments” and loves to put in little details like cracks in the road and sidewalks that speak to the condition of the place and time.

Whitworth is a graduate of Poplar Bluff Schools. After receiving his AA degree from Three Rivers, he continued his education and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Missouri State University. He is also a GIA trained gemologist, which accounts for his fascination with details.

“Studying gemstones has sharpened my observational skills, which has carried over to my art. Structure, design, and finish define the quality; the fun is in the details,” said Whitworth.
