Whitney Lauren Limanen, of Williamsville, has been awarded a $500 Henrickson Memorial Scholarship from Chapter DG of P.E.O., based in Poplar Bluff. The cash award will help defray costs of Limanen’s nursing studies at Three Rivers College (TRC).

Limanen, 31, is in her second semester of TRC’s nursing program and plans to graduate in May of 2021.

A former probation officer, a wife and a mother of two young children, Limanen decided to become a nurse in 2017, when her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she helped take care of him for his remaining four months.

Limanen says she hopes to work in an intensive care unit or a long-term care facility to gain experience in wound care after she graduates. She then plans to earn certification as a wound care specialist.

“I have seen first-hand ... how great wound care can improve the quality of a patient’s life, or even save a life,” she explained in her scholarship application.

Limanen is a 2007 graduate of Greenville High School. She is a member of Fellowship General Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff and does volunteer work for events sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Henrickson Memorial Scholarship is granted each January by Chapter DG of P.E.O. to a female TRC student living in Butler, Ripley, Carter or Wayne counties and studying for a health care career.

P.E.O. is an international philanthropic organization that supports and encourages education for women.
