The first of several alcohol compliance checks of local businesses recently resulted in three being found in violation for selling alcohol to underage patrons.

On Sept. 20, Poplar Bluff Police Department conducted its first of several upcoming alcohol compliance checks of local businesses, police Capt. Darron Moore said in a press release.

Of the 14 businesses that were visited during the check, “three were found in violation of selling alcohol to underage buyers,” Moore said.

The alleged violators, Moore said, were two restaurants — the Bronze Owl and The Office Bar and a grocery store — Aldi.

“They were given education material and warned, but not issued citations,” Moore said.

In the next few months, Moore said, the police department will conduct additional alcohol sale compliance checks at local businesses.

Moore said young adults under the age of 21 will visit businesses that sell alcoholic beverages by the drink or package and will try to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Police officers will be working with these minors and will cite employees and businesses for violations.

“We are confident local retailers and their employees share our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our children and young adults,” Moore said.

If there are any questions, or if you know of any businesses which are not checking identifications for the sales of alcoholic beverages, please contact Cpl. Richard Knapp at 573-785-5776 or by email at rknapp@pbpolice.org.
