City firefighters responded at 5:13 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to a report of smoke inside the 933 Vine St. residence owned by Michael Barker. City firefighters responded at 5:13 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to a report of smoke inside the 933 Vine St. residence owned by Michael Barker.

According to the report, firefighters found light smoke inside the home upon their arrival. Barker reported he had just turned on the furnace, and firefighters believe the smoke was caused by lint burning off the heat strips inside the furnace.

Firefighters used the department’s thermal-imagining camera to check the furnace to make sure it was not overheating.

City firefighters responded at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to a motor-vehicle crash on Oakhill, south of Barron Road.

According to the report, firefighters checked the vehicle(s) for any leaks or hazards.

City firefighters responded at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to a motor-vehicle crash at the intersection of Roxie Road and County Road 465.

According to the report, the crash was in the county, and firefighters assisted Butler County firefighters with removing a driver through the front windshield of his or her vehicle.

City firefighters responded at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to an alarm at the Poplar Bluff High School, 3209 Oak Grove Road. It was investigation only.

City firefighters responded at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, to a report of smoke inside Carolyn’s Fashion House, 1923 N. Westwood Blvd.

According to the report, the owner told firefighters she had turned on the heat system and noticed smoke in the rear area of the building. The system was shut off before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters reportedly found a small amount of smoke in the building. They removed the furnace cover and used the department’s thermal-imaging camera to check for excessive heat. None was found.

The heat was turned on while firefighters monitored the system for any signs of smoke.

Firefighters determined the smoke was caused by a build up of dust on the heating element. The owner was told to shut off the heat and have the system checked before it was turned on again.
