GREENVILLE —Calvin R. Scowden, age 94, of Lowndes, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, surrounded by his family. Born June 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Byron Leslie Scowden and Mary Ann Katherine Houseman Scowden.
Mr. Scowden graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. A decorated veteran, he served in the Army from September 1943 to January 1946. Mr. Scowden was a rifleman with the 349th Infantry Regiment, part of the legendary 88th Infantry, and was awarded, among many other medals, three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
A graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Mr. Scowden taught in Wayne County school districts for 42 years, where he made countless lifelong friends. He ran a successful cattle farm in his beloved Lowndes and served as a clerk at various area livestock auctions. Mr. Scowden was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was of the General Baptist faith and a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Lowndes.
Mr. Scowden is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 73 years, Wilma Jane Ward Scowden; his daughters, Barbara Scowden Alexander (Dan) of Malden, Tricia Scowden Burkett (Glenn) of Jackson, Mo., and Cathryn Scowden Bruce (Doyle) of Benton, Mo.; six grandchildren, Dana Cook of Bernie, Scott Burkett of Jackson, Mo., Darrick Bruce of Scott City, Mo., Ryan Burkett, of Chicago, Ill., Anitra Bahner of Jackson, Mo. and Blaine Bruce of Jackson, Mo.; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Scowden was a loving role model to all.
Mr. Scowden is survived by his brother, Don Scowden (Linda) of Greenville and was preceded in death by his brother, Leo Scowden.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at the Morrison Funeral Chapel in Greenville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Leeman Shirrell officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Corinth Church Cemetery in Lowndes.
