Three Poplar Bluff teens died in a car crash in early October 2017. Now the family of one of the teens is taking steps to put positivity in the community.

Sixteen-year-old Camille M. McCain was one of the teens who passed away from the crash on Highway W that weekend. Her parents, Shang McCain and Tawana Ashcraft, are starting the Millie Foundation in her honor. While they’re starting with helping other non-profits, they have big goals for the Foundation.

They made a donation to Whole Kids Outreach on Friday night during the annual banquet both as a way to show support and to work on building connections with other non-profits in the area.

Whole Kids Outreach offers programs for kids and aid for families in its center along with making home visits to some families.

“I went to one of their events last year and donated toys,” Ashcraft said. “It’s just been around for a long time, they’re very nice people, and they help moms and babies in our surrounding area. They’re constantly giving back and we’re the type of people to give as well.”

Ashcraft said they’re trying to help the other non-profits in the area to help meet the needs they have.

Ashcraft said the eventual goal for the Millie Foundation is to offer somewhere safe for kids to be through creating a sports/learning complex.

“It’s a safe place for kids to be able to come to for free,” Ashcraft said. “There’s nothing in Poplar Bluff for kids anymore.”

Ashcraft said they will also offer a Camille McCain softball award and scholarship each year as a way to recognize others who share a similar passion as she did.

“We’re just getting started,” Ashcraft said.
