The Twin Rivers R-X schools will be hosting a community event Wednesday night at the high school with Columbine, Colorado school shooting survivor Craig Scott.

Scott has been presenting at schools for 15 years about his experience in the Columbine shooting, which includes watching two of his friends get shot and later finding out that his sister, Rachel Joy Scott, was one of the first to be killed during the shooting. His presentation to high school and middle school students includes his story of the shooting, while the elementary school presentation is focused on stories of his sister and encouraging acts of kindness. Both presentations encourage students to see their self-value and put positivity into their community.

During these community events, which are geared toward adults, he shares more of his story from the shooting with a focus on being a survivor and turning pain into something positive. Scott said the adult presentation is similar to the one he gives to the high school students, but it’s slightly different. He discusses forgiveness, ways to turn negative emotions into positive ones, looking for the good in life and valuing yourself and others.

“A lot of people think they’re going to come and just hear about the shooting, but they walk away inspired, hearing story and some challenges to them in their personal life,” Scott said. “I’m not just coming to educate about Columbine, I don’t care about that at all. I’m teaching on principles and things they can use in their life.”

The event will be at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley at 6 p.m. It will last approximately an hour and is open to any adult who wishes to attend.
