A Poplar Bluff man wanted on suspicion of shooting a women Friday on Grand Avenue is behind bars and facing a variety of charges.

George Robert Strahan of the 1000 block of Apple Street turned himself into the police shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, Police Chief Danny Whiteley said.

Strahan is being held in the Butler County jail and the Poplar Bluff Police are requesting charges of assault in the first degree, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to earlier reports, 59-year-old Condia Luster was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound and released from an area hospital Friday.

At 12:55 p.m., Friday officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Grand in reference to the shooting. Detective Daniel Mustain said the woman was shot with a small-caliber gun.

Detective Andy Cleaveland went to the hospital to interview Luster, who had been shot in the neck and back. She told Cleaveland, Strahan walked up and shot her.

When officers began an extensive search for Strahan, he evaporated, said Cleaveland, explaining, they put out the word they were looking for him. The pressure from everyone in the community caused him to turn himself into the police.

“He knew he was going to get caught sooner or later,” Cleaveland said.

Prior to this incident, Cleaveland said, law enforcement had limited contact with the suspect.

Detective Scott Phelps interviewed Strahan on Monday evening.
