The Kay Jewell Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the United Cancer Assistance Network will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at the Westwood Hills Country Club.
“Kay was a volunteer for a long time and she was the board treasurer for five years,” said UCAN Executive Director Melody Chailland. “Join us in supporting UCAN and the memory of our dear friend.”
Jewell was battling cancer for the fourth time when she died. The event is being hosted by UCAN.
Sally and Don Metz, who have been organizing the event for about a decade, are coordinating this year’s tournament in Jewell’s memory.
“Don is a cancer survivor. He’s been cancer free since his surgery,” UCAN board member Sally Metz said. “We needed to give something back and this is what we have done. UCAN just does wonders, I like the fact they are so amazing.”
Fundraisers like the four-person scramble tournament help UCAN fill a financial gap, the program is designed to provide individualized support for patients. When patients come into the UCAN office, they are greeted by volunteers whose lives have been touched by cancer.
Sally Metz praised Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for covering the $2,500 tab for lunch.
She also said, “Don is good at getting more contributions” and the biggest donated gifts are a $500 gift from Hefner Furniture & Appliances and a generator from Briggs & Stratton. Baldwin Automotive Group is donating $500 for the person closest to the pin on the 10th hole while the player closest to the pin on No. 12 wins $500 from a Larry Hillis Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat donation.
It is not too late for players to register, Sally Metz said. There is still time for more teams to join the 20-plus groups already registered.
Anyone wanting to register or get additional information, may call Don Metz at 573-718-7839.
