Rev. James ‘Albert’ Wood was born Dec 4, 1932 in Taskee, MO. He went home to be with the Lord May 1, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital, Cape Girardeau, MO, after a vehicle accident. He graduated from Greenville High school in 1950 and attended Columbia Bible Seminary in Columbia, SC,
Albert pastored multiple churches in southeast Missouri, including Coldwater Baptist Church in Coldwater, First Baptist Church in Williamsville, both in Wayne County, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Butler County and conducted many funerals and weddings. He was an avid and passionate student of the Bible his entire life.
He faithfully served with his wife Marietta the last many years in ministry at United Gospel Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff, General Baptist Nursing Home of Campbell, MO, and Magnolia Manor Assisted Living Center in Piggott, AR.
He professed his faith in Jesus Christ at age 15. James Albert Wood’s entire passion in life was serving his Lord and leading others to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and a confident assurance of where they would spend eternity.
He worked as a farmer and in construction in Wayne County, was employed by Tiffany Office Furniture Manufacturing in Poplar Bluff, and worked at Department of Corrections in Pacific, Missouri, from where he retired in 2004.
Albert married Lee Etta Garner Hixon in 1964 and adopted her three children: Carol, Debra, and Ronald. Later they added to their family with Nathan, Greg, and Diane. They enjoyed 38 years of marriage with their six children and created many beautiful memories. Lee Etta passed away in 2002.
He married Marietta Hughes in 2004 which gave him additional children of Donetta, Diana, Marty, and Mary, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by wife Marietta, children: Carol (son-in-law Cecil Forbes), Debra (son-in-law Terry Gibson), and Ronald (daughter-in-law Cynthia), Nathan, Greg, and Diane (son-in-law Michael Loveless), Donetta (Terry) Ginn, Diana (Bill) Perkinson, Marty Hughes (deceased), Mary Francis Hughes; grandchildren: John (Melanie) Heisel; Jamie and Whitney Gibson; Amy (David) Bennett, Amanda (Justin) Sly, Joshua Wood; Ethan and Logan Wood, Rebecca (Michael) Pulley; five great-grandchildren: Andrew Heisel; Damian Pyles, Dimitri Pyles, Hunter Green, Alanea and Collyns Sly. Also surviving are his brothers Leon (Shirley) Wood, Vernon (Janey) Wood, Ira (Juanita) Wood; sister-in-law Yuvonne Wood; and sister Judy (Junior) Jones; numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Albert is preceded in death by parents Clarence and Dessie Wood, wife Lee Etta Wood, brothers Eugene, Edmond, & Bobby, a sister Janey Young, and stepson Marty Hughes.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Westwood Baptist Church, 419 CR 5231 in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Westwood Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Proctor officiating. Burial will be at Rucker Cemetery in Wayne County.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the United Gospel Rescue Mission of Poplar Bluff.
