DEXTER — Stop signs will soon be erected in the Valley’s Addition Subdivision near Boon Park after a vote Monday night by the Dexter Board of Aldermen.

The subdivision, Dexter City Administrator Mark Stidham said, is finished and several homes already have been built.

Additional homes, he said, will be continue to be built as the subdivision still is developing.

According to Dexter City Attorney Yewell Lawrence Jr., there have been some “complaints from the people that they need stop signs down there.”

Stidham said a citizen reported he was nearly T-boned at one of intersections in the subdivision when another vehicle failed to yield to his vehicle.

The man, Stidham said, had a “straight shot” on Susan Street to One Mile Road.

Stidham said motorists on Susan Street have the right of way, with those on the side streets having to yield right of way to those on Susan.

With subdivisions, “developers can’t pass an ordinance to put up a stop sign; the city works with developers to make sure all the proper signage is installed,” Stidham said.

By a 4-0 vote, the aldermen approved an ordinance providing for the erection of stop signs on:

• Adams Drive at Susan Street;

• Parkview Drive at Susan Street;

• Lillian Avenue at Susan Street;

• Watkins Circle at Lillian Avenue, eastbound and westbound; and

• Tammy Lane at Lillian Avenue.

Stidham presented the aldermen with bids for the mowing of city properties and the Dexter Cemetery.

“We had advertised bids for mowing of city properties,” Stidham said. “ … The low bid was T&S Lawn at $255.

“I recommend using them for mowing the city properties,” which includes such properties as city hall, police department, fire department, library and depot.

The other five bids ranged from $345 to $500.

Stidham said two bids were received for the cemetery — Heartland Lawn at $1,500 and Pennington Lawn at $1,600.

The cemetery, Stidham said, also includes moving the Highway 60 right-of-way.

“They did mow the cemetery last year probably four times, five times maybe,” Stidham said. “That’s a job.”

Stidham asked the aldermen to approve both low bids, which they did by a unanimous vote.

In other business the board unanimously approved:

• A resolution adopting the Stoddard County 2019 hazard mitigation plan update;

• An ordinance approving the execution of a contract with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for the construction of a walking trail along Arvin Road from One Mile Road to Sycamore Road;

• A city plumber license for APC Mechanical LLC;

• The reappointment of Corey Bennett, Bennetta Harrellson, Leonard Morse and Connie Blackwell to the Dexter Tree Council;

• The reappointment of Melba Walker to the Housing Authority & Fair Housing committees; and

• The reappointment of Dean Bishop to the Airport Board.

Alderman Frank Killian and Jerry Corder were absent from Monday’s meeting.
