BERNIE, Mo. — A pedestrian who died Sunday may have intentionally stepped in front of a train in the Bernie area, officials said Monday afternoon.

“(The) preliminary investigation and evidence available indicates it is an apparent suicide,” said Sgt. Clark Parrott, Missouri State Highway Patrol public information officer.

The victim, Amos E. Vaughn, 42, of Stuckey, Illinois, had been staying with friends in the area, said Stoddard County Coroner Kenny Pope.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., Pope said, adding there was no vehicle involved.

Union Pacific is also conducting its own investigation into the incident, he said.
