Haven House, Inc. of Poplar Bluff will host its annual Volunteer Training and Orientation at 6 p.m. Tuesday. For over 30 years the non-profit organization has served as the only designated domestic violence shelter in a five-county area.

In 2018, the organization provided assistance through its hotline to more than 1,250 persons in need of help due to domestic violence or sexual assault. The program employs 12 full-time positions.

“The community of Poplar Bluff has always supported our efforts to assist those affected by domestic and sexual violence. As we continue to grow, the need for a larger volunteer database becomes apparent,” says Mary Ann Allen, who recently completed her 31st year as the shelter’s executive director.

The average volunteer at Haven House donates anywhere from two to 10 hours per month. Their current volunteer database contains many local citizens who offer their talents to assist residents with haircuts, computer training, nutrition, resumes and childcare. Others assist with events, fundraisers, donations, answering the crisis hotline and the organization of clothing and household goods, storage and distribution. The shelter is also looking for individuals with social service and medical backgrounds to assist with their court advocacy and sexual assault programs.

“It’s an easy way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on others,” said Haven House Volunteer Coordinator Melody Ducote. “We ask for a one-year commitment and a minimum of two hours per month.

“Most people are surprised to learn we can accommodate their schedules and that we can use their talents, no matter what they may be,” Ducote said. “We are open 24 hours, seven days a week, and we are so grateful for our volunteers. It is rare that someone cannot volunteer during their preferred time. We currently have 16 volunteers on our roster and they each have unique schedules, talents and gifts. We are grateful for them and their willingness to serve.”
