POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — Vida Lucille Schalk, age 94, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at Oakdale Caring Center.
Vida was born to the late Delbert and Lucy (Roe) Stroud, on Jan. 3, 1925. She was raised in the Rombauer and Broseley area.
On Aug. 30, 1946, Vida married Theodore “Ted” Junior Schalk. Ted preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2016. Together for 69 years, they raised their five surviving children: Sam (Rita) Schalk, Margie (Ron) Rains, Myra Thurman, Sue (John) Stuart, and John (Sheri) Schalk; ten grandchildren: Eric Schalk, Melanie Schalk, Lori Schalk, Jenifer Richardson, Marnie Claxton, Jill Null, Sally Kelley, John Andrew Stuart, Adam Stuart, Tyler Schalk, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Vida was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Marilyn and six brothers: Chester Stroud, Claude Stroud, Bill Stroud, Sherman Stroud, Otis Stroud and June Stroud.
Vida was known for growing beautiful flowers and as being one of Poplar Bluff’s first Wal-Mart employees. After her retirement Vida enjoyed making decorative pillows, baskets, and garters for area bridal and flower shops.
A family graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at Poplar Bluff City Cemetery with Reverend Byron Beck officiating.
