The Poplar Bluff High School Beta Club has joined a list of nationally recognized clubs by being named a 2018-19 National School of Distinction.
National Beta announced the achievement, which required a 10 percent increase membership. Poplar Bluff Beta Club's membership jumped 468 percent.
"Last year there were 16 paid members," Beta cosponsor Stephanie Kuper said. "This year we have 91 paid members."
This award is an honor for Beta Clubs striving toward academic achievement, exemplary character, demonstrated leadership and service to others.
Award recipients received a National Beta School of Distinction banner to proudly display as a symbol of their accomplishment.
"Receiving the School of Distinction award showcases our students' commitment to excellence in academics and service to the community," Kuper said. "The growth our club has seen this year shows that students want to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and the National Beta Club offers a way for students to excel in multiple areas."
Kuper said the surge in membership came following "Club Day" held Sept. 5 at the high school.
The four Beta Club officers as well as the state Beta sponsors and officers made a presence at the school to discuss all things Beta with potential members.
Following the conclusion of Club Day, 186 students expressed an interest in Beta.
"That many students interested is huge," Kuper said.
Following a meeting and paying dues, the club began their new year with 91 members.
Recipients of the National School of Distinction will be recognized at the 2019 National Beta Convention in Oklahoma City, Okla., this June as well as the State Beta Convention this weekend.
Beta Clubs qualify to attend the National Convention by placing in the top three positions in different competitions during the State Convention.
"We will be taking 43 members in grades nine through 12 to State Beta Convention this weekend in Springfield, Missouri, where we will be competing in 32 different competitions ranging from academic tests, to artistic competitions to performances," Kuper said. "This is the first State Beta Convention the high school Beta Club has attended in over 10 years."
During convention, students are recognized for their talents, whether it be academics, arts or performing, she said.
Kuper and cosponsor Sara Holloway are also in contention for Educators of Distinction by being named a National School of Distinction.
Kuper added there is more incentive to joining Beta Club then just attending conventions.
There are scholarship opportunities, community service projects and a way to help keep student's grades up, she said.
"This prestigious honor is a true indication of Poplar Bluff High School's dedication to academic excellence, leadership development and commitment to celebrating their student's achievements," said National Beta's Chief Executive Officer Bobby Hart.
