Twin Rivers athletes are predicted to return to their home court in time for the first home basketball game Dec. 10.
During Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Jeremy Siebert said the new gym floor, featuring "TR" letters with "Royals" across, has been painted and received its second layer of coating Monday.
Following water damage suffered from a broken pipe in September, Siebert said by next Monday students can begin to practice and play on the high school gym floor.
"It's moving along," he said.
To complete the gym makeover, Siebert reported to the board the bleacher motors are scheduled to ship to the high school Nov. 30. The company will be on site the following day for installation.
Siebert also informed the board the fencing project at Qulin was complete and work has began at the Broseley campus.
"Once they finish (at Broseley) they will be going to Fisk," he said.
BOARD FILING
Filing for the April 2, 2019 school board election will open at 8 a.m. Dec. 11 through Jan. 15. Interested candidates for a three-year term may apply at Central Office during school hours.
Board members Dennis Whitlow and President Jeff Arnold are up for reelection if they choose to refile.
APR SCORES
School districts, including Twin Rivers, are still waiting to receive Annual Performance Report (APR) scores from last year, but are estimated to be released Nov. 27.
Siebert said this is the latest he can remember not having APR and MAP scores, but hopes they will be ready for the December board meeting.
EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Early Childhood Special Education program is still on track to begin in January.
"This is a service we have needed for a long time," Arnold said.
Qulin Principal Seth McBroom said the classroom at the Qulin campus has been spaced out and a wall has been removed.
Program applications are ready for students and invites are being prepared, McBroom said.
"It's an exciting time for us," he said.
Fisk Principal Leean Mann said the building being prepared at her campus is almost complete.
"The building at Fisk looks awesome," she said.
Painting has been completed as well as repairs and cleaning.
The last hurdle, according to McBroom, is solidifying transportation with Head Start. The two programs will be sharing about three to five students.
Head Start will be dropping students off at the ECSE program, but McBroom said getting the students back is still being worked out.
SUMMER SCHOOL
Siebert proposed to the board signing with Summer Journey to create curriculum and recruit students for the district's summer school program.
The company guarantees they can double the district's average daily attendance from the previous year.
According to Siebert, the district's average daily attendance for summer school has slowly declined each year.
By signing with the company, Siebert said the district is required to pay a percentage of summer school profits to the group.
If the company can double Twin Rivers summer school average daily attendance, Siebert said the district will see an increased profit from last year.
"I would like to give it a try this summer and if we don't like it we don't have to do it next summer," he said.
Other schools in the area have used Summer Journey and liked what they had to offer, Siebert added.
AUDIT
The school district's auditor is scheduled to be at the December board meeting to present the audit to the board.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
During executive session, the board unanimously accepted the resignation of Fisk nurse Heather O'Dell.
Unanimously hired by the board was Naida Roscouius, interpreter at Qulin, Peyton Howerton, aide at Fisk, Dennis Kelly, bus driver, Houston Blue, Junior Beta at Fisk and Dalton Freshour, junior high baseball coach.
Five students were approved to graduate in December.
In a 4-2 vote, David Dugger and Whitlow voting 'no,' the board approved opening up for the head volleyball coach for 2019.
NEXT MEETING
The next Twin Rivers R-X Board of Education meeting will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 18 at the Central Office board room.
