Staff Reports

Sweet treats may be missing from the Thanksgiving meal at the United Gospel Rescue if donations of desserts don't increase. While no one will leave hungry Thursday, there's not enough time for Rev. Gregory Kirk, his staff and volunteers to make the 150 pies and/or cakes, which are usually donated by community members.

Kirk said Tuesday morning donations totalled about five items, which will not feed the 1,200 he's expecting to serve.

Roll up your sleeves and make your family's favorite pies, cakes and cookies or if your schedule is full, grab a few treats at the bakery or grocery store. You may drop them off at the mission anytime.

If you want to volunteer to help put the finishing touches on the meal, show up anytime after 8 a.m. Thursday and "come for an hour or a whole day," Kirk said. There will be plenty of last minute details for you to handle.

If you want to deliver meals, arrive at the mission at 10:30 a.m. The Poplar Bluff Firefighters have volunteered to give directions to different locations. You can deliver to one location or come back and deliver to more than one.
