As many of our hunters are aware, Sept. 15 brought the opening day of archery season.
During archery season, hunters should continue to be aware of a few dangers. Since temperatures have remained high, mosquitoes are still very prevalent. I encourage all hunters to carry a Thermacell or some other type of bug repellent.
With the heat, it is also a good idea to keep an extra bottle of water or two in a backpack.
Harvesting a deer this time of year means time is also a factor. Being sure to wait for a good opportunity to harvest a deer with a bow can aide in shortening the time it takes to recover the animal. Raw meat will spoil very quickly in the heat.
When hunting close to property lines with a bow, it can be beneficial to be in touch with adjoining landowners if a wounded deer crosses the property boundary. Crossing onto someone else's property to recover a wounded animal is considered trespassing.
I recommend being in touch with neighboring landowners, because saving this time could mean the difference between good or bad meat.
For hunters using tree stands, I always suggest using some type of fall restraint device, and always let someone know where you plan to hunt and when you plan to return. Also keep them up to date in case those plans change.
