VAN BUREN -- An open house will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Heritage Workshop in Van Buren, which teaches traditional Ozark crafts.

The workshop is located at the headquarters for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

The event is free and the public is welcome, according to organizers.

The Heritage Workshop is the home of the Institute for Traditional Ozark Crafts, a program at the Riverways that focuses on the cultural heritage of the Ozarks. The workshop teaches and demonstrates many traditional skills that were the lifeways of the Scots-Irish settlers.

During the open house, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of historic tools and how they were used. The focus for the day will be woodworking with traditional Ozark tools, wood cleaving and riving, tool cleaning and preservation, and tool sharpening.

Participants who are interested in more in-depth instruction can learn how to join the Heritage Workshop to acquire these traditional skills.

The Park Headquarters is located at 404 Watercress Drive in Van Buren. For more information visit www.nps.gov/ozar or call 573-323-4236, ext. 0.
