BLOOMFIELD -- The numbers were staggering.

Thirty-three runs, 19 walks, 16 unearned runs, 17 strikeouts, 12 errors, eight pitchers, five runners picked off on the base paths, five lead changes and four sacrifice bunts.

However, the most important number was one for the Holcomb baseball team who secured its first win of the season Tuesday with a wild 18-15 victory over the Bloomfield Wildcats.

The Hornets scored nine runs in the seventh inning and then held off a Bloomfield rally in the bottom of the frame to improve to 1-2.

The Wildcats took advantage of three walks and two hit-batsmen in the seventh to score three runs but left the bases loaded. They remain winless at 0-3.

"(The Hornets) did well in the seventh," Bloomfield coach Jon Simpher said. "They hit the baseball well. We gave them a couple. ... We just fell a hair short. Proud of the effort that we gave to claw back in it and give ourselves a chance to win it there at the end."

The Wildcats committed one of their nine errors in the seventh, and only seven of Holcomb's seventh-inning runs were earned.

"Routine plays. That's what we've talked about all season," Simpher said. "If we make routine plays, we're going to put ourselves in a position to win. The two innings they scored (five or more runs) were the two innings we didn't make some plays we should have."

In the Hornets seventh, Austin Wallace, who went 2 for 4 with four runs scored and one RBI, reached base on an error by the shortstop and scored on Jimmie Davis' bases-loaded walk.

C.A. Heuring, who went 2 for 4 with one run scored, singled and scored when ninth-place batter Hunter Randl was hit by a pitch. Eli Morgan, who went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, and Wilson McGee each singled home two runs. Wallace followed with a run-scoring double, Heuring singled home a run and Wallace stole home.

"Young guys," Holcomb coach Marty Young said of his players. "We're starting one senior, one junior and the rest are freshmen and sophomores. ... I was proud. ... They executed and did what they could do."

The Hornets played error-free baseball except for the sixth inning where Bloomfield scored three unearned runs.

"We kind of try to work on throwing strikes and playing defense," Young said "We're not a big run-scoring team. I can't explain today, but I'm proud of them. Defense and pitching needs to be our forte."

The Wildcats' three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth gave them a 12-9 lead. David Carter, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Will Robison and scored on the second of three straight errors by Holcomb.

Gavin Chasteen, Jordan Schlueter and Malik Williams reached base on errors with Chasteen scoring on a miscue by the second baseman.

Brandon Siler, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, capped the scoring with an RBI double.

McGee was the winning pitcher, yielding five runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk in two innings.

Chasteen was charged with the loss, permitting five runs, four earned, on four hits with no strikeouts and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Each team scored a run in the first, and Ethan Pennington gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead in the second with a three-run double.

The Hornets tied the score with three runs in the fourth, and each team scored five in the fifth.
