VAN BUREN -- A trio of errors in the bottom of the seventh inning helped Van Buren defeat Twin Rivers 6-5 in a back and forth game. Hailie Hampton scored the winning run after Morgan Shockley laid down a bunt that resulted in a throwing error at third base. Van Buren held an early lead at 2-0, but five Twin Rivers runs in the fifth inning gave it a brief three-run lead. But the Lady Dawgs quickly tied the game up with two runs in the home half of the fifth before scoring the game-winner in the seventh.
Willow Springs 11, East Carter 1
An eight-run third inning propelled Willow Springs past East Carter Tuesday. The Redbirds only managed two hits on the day, one from Naomi Crowley and the other from Bailey Gargac. Six errors plagued East Carter, tallying seven. Makenna Moore pitched all six innings before the game was stopped by run rule. Moore gave up eight hits and eleven runs but only two were earned. She also struck out seven.
Neelyville 11 Alton 0
Payton Reinbott scored pitched five innings and struck out seven for Neelyville as the Lady TIgers earned a shutout victory against Alton. Reinbott joined Madison Dollins, Bailey McGruder, Paige Earls and Tori Harlow as team leaders with two hits. Dollins added three RBIs to lead the team. Neelyville successfully stole seven bases. The game ended via run rule after the Lady Tigers scored all 11 of their runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
BASEBALL
Alton 19 Neelyville 2
Neelyville put two runs on the board in the first inning of Tuesday's game against Alton. But from then on it was shutout. The game was within reach until Alton put up six runs in the fourth inning and eight more in the fifth to force a stoppage. Neelyville only managed four hits in the game, all of which came in the first three innings. Alton recorded 17 hits. Morgan Odell led the led the way for Alton on the mound, tossing four innings and striking out four.
Clearwater 9 Van Buren 0
Clearwater pitcher Jesse Holmes gave up just three hits and struck out eight in a shutout bid against Van Buren Tuesday. The Tigers recorded nine hits, but 13 walked batters helped add more runs to their lead. Trey Rivas produced a four of five outing to complement five RBIs and a run scored. Rivas also pitched the final inning, striking out two of the batters he faced. Clearwater stranded 11 runners on base, and Van Buren left 10 of its own on base.
Campbell 10 Risco 0
Four runs in the first inning were all Campbell would need to pick up a shutout victory over Risco via run rule. Ben Barnett led the charge, pitching all five innings and allowing just one hit and fanning four batters. Barnett led the way in the batter's box, too. He tallied two hits to match Sky Morrison for the team lead.
Greenville 13 South Iron 0
Tye Huff led the way for Greenville in a near-perfect game. Huff went three of four at the plate, scoring four runs to go along with two RBIs. On the mound, Huff pitched all five innings before the game was stopped by run rule. Huff allowed two hits and struck out six on 67 pitches. Jason Bratton matched Huff for the team lead with three hits but led the Bears with five RBIs in the shutout win.
Bell City 9 Puxico 1
Andrew Hicks struck out eight batters in six innings on the mound as Bell City earned a victory against Puxico Tuesday. Two runs in the first inning courtesy of an error at first base and a follow-up single by Jack Duenne would prove to be enough for Bell City. The Cubs added three more runs in the fourh inning and another four in the fifth to cushion its lead. Puxico scored a run in the seventh via an error to avoid a shutout.
VOLLEYBALL
Eminence 2 Clearwater 0 (25-14, 25-16)
Clearwater lost its season opener to Eminence in straight sets. Faith Hoppe led the team with five kills. Head coach Lisa Ayers said the team now knows some of the things to work on in practice and noted Rachel Rowold displayed some solid passing in the game.
TENNIS
The Dexter Bearcats fell a win short of their second shutout in two matches this season Tuesday in their home-opening 9-1 win over Charleston.
The girls tennis team shut out Sikeston 9-0 Monday.
In singles, No. 1 Jaden Northcutt defeated De'Quilla Williams 8-0, No. 2 Abby Dorton defeated Anica Paris 8-1, No. 3 Malia Cook defeated Ryshedah Smith 8-2, No. 4 Maci McBride defeated Zakiya Wilson 8-4, No. 5 Courtney Northcutt defeated Kaelynn Taber 8-2 and No. 6 Kyla Propst defeated Nickkiyia Pratt 8-6.
In doubles, No. 1 Jadyn Northcutt-Dorton beat Williams-Smith 8-0 and No. 3 Courtney Northcutt-Propt beat Taber-Pratt 8-1. In No. 2 doubles, Paris-Wilson beat Cook-McBride 8-4.
