FENTON, Mo. -- Poplar Bluff lost to Lindbergh 9-3 to open its season Saturday, then rebounded to beat Francis Howell 7-5 and Festus 14-1 to go 2-1 at the Rockwood Summit Tournament on Saturday in Fenton, Mo.
The Mules were limited to two hits in their opener, one each by Lauren Alexander and Savannah Hicks. Hicks also had two RBIs and a double, while Alexander drove in Poplar Bluff's other run. The Mules also drew seven walks. Alexander pitched five innings in the loss and allowed seven hits with four strikeouts and five walks
The Mules scored five runs in the final two innings to rally against Frnacis Howell. Audrey Lack, batting second, was 4 for 4 with two RBIs in the win. Savannah Hicks, Ella Zgaynor and Emily Cheek all scored twice. Cheek also had two RBIs and a hit. Alexander allowed seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in the five-inning win.
Alexander gave up two hits and a run with four walks and six strikeouts against Festus, which was also a five-inning game. Seven different Mules scored and Poplar Bluff scored in every inning.
Emma Johnson tripled and was 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Alexander and Hicks both doubled. Alexander was 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Hicks was 3 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs.

The Mules split their two games at the Christian Brothers College Shootout on Saturday. Poplar Bluff (1-1) beat J.I. Case (Wisc.) 2-0 and lost to Jefferson City 4-0 after being scoreless at halftime. Wyatt Rowland scored off a rebound for Poplar Bluff's first goal of the season and Xander Martin scored off a diagonal pass from Gage Rowland.
CROSS COUNTRY
Jaden Deaton won Poplar Bluff's first race of the season at Jackson CIty Park on Saturday, running the two mile course in 12 minutes and 53 seconds.
Katelyn Moeller led the Lady Mules, finishing in 16:42 in 11th place.
Dylan Cisne took 23rd in 14:11 while Julia Smothers was 29th in 15:49. Johnathon Thurmon was 44th (15:46) while Seth Ingle took 54th (16:46), Brent Worley was 66th (16:06), Ross Dare was 88th and Eric Bennet was 103rd (20:30).
In the freshman race, Salah McCormack was 16th among the girls in 14:30 while Bryce Critts was 33rd in the boys race in 12:56 and Tristan Gillihan was 45th (13:06).
SWIMMING
The Poplar Bluff boys swimming program made its return Saturday at the West Plains Dual and finished fifth out of eight teams with 38 points.
The team of Jack Harrison, Christian Todd, Gavin Vaughn and Kastin Caudel picked up 10 points in the 200 medley after finishing fourth in 2:24.97. The same four, racing in a different order, also took fourth in the 200 free in 2:07.51.
Vaughn earned took third, Poplar Bluff's best finish on the day, in the 400 free in 5:17.17 for six points, and added four points in the 200 after finishing fourth in 2:27.33.
Harrison finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.90 for five points and got two points in the 100 butterfly after taking seventh in 1:18.72. Caudel added a point in the 50 free after finishing 10th in 30.50.
