Marjorie M. Owens stepped into eternity on May 5, 2018 at the age of 96. Marjorie was born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the daughter of Alfred and Helen Hillis. She was one of six children that survived into adulthood and was the last living member of that generation of the Hillis family.
In 1942, Marjorie met and married John Russell Ruser while both worked at Remington Arms in St. Louis, Mo.. One child was born to this marriage, namely John Russell Ruser, Jr. of Georgetown, Texas. Russell Ruser died in 1958 and Marjorie was a widow for eight years prior to marrying Morgan Wilson Owens and acquiring two additional children, Bobbie (Owens) Parker and James M. Owens (deceased). Morgan Owens passed away in 2004 and in 2006, Marjorie moved to Georgetown, Texas to be near her son.
Marjorie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo. for 53 years and a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Georgetown for 12 years. Marjorie's favorite hobbies included baking and sewing.
After moving to Georgetown, she joined the sewing group of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League where, for several years, she sewed quilt tops as part of a League project to make quilts and distribute them worldwide to those in need. In her 92rd year, she sewed over 100 quilt tops for this project.
Survivors include son, John (Patti) of Georgetown; granddaughter, Gretchen Ruser Vaughn (Eric) of Katy, Texas, with seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Bobbie Parker (Ed) of Ballwin, Mo. with three grandchildren, Kelly, Michael and Chris and numerous great-grandchildren and two grandchildren of James Owens.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. A graveside service and interment will follow at 11 a.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff with the Rev. Justin Sponaugle officiating.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Georgetown, Texas at a later date.
