The Neelyville R-IV Board of Education saw a couple changes following the April 3 election including a new president and member.

Fifth year board member Paul Petty was elected as the new president and Gene Russom will serve as vice president.

"Everyone here is more than qualified to be president," Petty said. "My main focus is to be here for the kids and teachers."

Petty added the board works well together and while they share different opinions, he sees that as a benefit.

"We want to hear all sides and have different opinions," he said.

Russom, who has served as president at one point during his time on the school board, said even with his new title, he is not much different than the other board members.

"I'm 100 percent here for the kids. That is what it's about," he said. "I want to make sure I'm doing right by them and support the school system."

Jim Hover was also sworn in for his first time as a Neelyville School Board member.

Former President John French elected not to run for re-election prompting no election with two seats open and two candidates filing.

The board unanimously accepted revised and updated policies from the Missouri School Board Association.

Superintendent Brad Hagood explained MSBA is the entity who writes board policies for the Neelyville School Board, as well as keeps the group updated on items such as court cases and federal and state laws.

Hagood said he didn't see anything concerning with the revisions and updates presented.

Assistant Elementary Principal Debra Parish updated the board on summer tutoring which takes place at Hillview for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Of the 40 students on the list, Parish said her concern was most would not have transportation to and from tutoring during the summer break.

She went on to add there may not be enough students attending tutoring to justify having two teachers and one may be enough.

With the next board meeting on the last day of school, May 17, the board decided to wait and move forward if the interest is there for summer tutoring.

During Executive Session the board accepted the resignation of Mary Beaird, who served part-time with Parents as Teachers after school hours.

The board also hired all non-certified staff members for next school year as well as Sarah Armes for a kindergarten position.

The next Neelyville Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17 at the Central Office board room.
