VAN BUREN, Mo. -- Rev. John Leroy Smith, Sr., 82, son of the late Cary A. and Anna (Allison) Smith was born Oct. 10, 1935 in Madison, Ill., and died Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at his residence in Ellington, Mo., with his family by his side.

John had resided in Ellington since 1994 and was formerly of Washington, Ill. He was of the Pentecostal faith, and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. He carried ministerial license with the Assemblies of God and pastored several churches. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, traveling, and camping with family and friends. John loved the Lord; he would minister for several different churches, he loved to be involved in the ministry.

On May 21, 1955, he was united in marriage to Florence Brame in Granite City, Ill. She survives of the home.

John is survived by one son, Lyndell "Buddy" Ray Smith, of Ellington; one daughter-in-law, Nelda Smith of Cubero, N. M.; two brothers, James Smith and wife Norma of North Pekin, Ill., and Charles Smith of Caseyville, Ill; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by one son, John Leroy Smith, Jr., and four sisters, Eileen Rogers, Hazel Sturgeon, Carrie Gresham, and Alberta Rist.

Visitation will begin for the public at 6 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018, at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, with the Funeral Services being held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the First Assembly of God Church in van Buren, Mo. Officiating: Rev. Dave Truncone. Burial: Gresham Cemetery in Ellsinore.
