Two area residents were killed this week in unrelated crashes in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Terry L. Scowden, 58, of Greenville, Mo., was killed in a one-vehicle crash, which occurred at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday on Highway D, seven miles south of Greenville.

Scowden reportedly was operating a 2016 Jeep Sport southbound when it crossed the center of the road and ran off the left side of the road.

Scowden's SUV then reportedly struck two trees.

Scowden was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m. by Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch, who was acting coroner.

The patrol also reports Walter R. Brotherton, 50, of Wappapello, Mo., died in a two-vehicle crash, which occurred at 3:49 p.m. Monday on Highway 51 in Perry County.

According to the report, Walter A. Gawrych, 44, of Jackson, Mo., was operating a 2016 Ford southbound when it crossed the center line, and its front right end struck the front right end of a northbound 2016 Peterbilt Conventional.

Gawrych's vehicle then ran off the left side of the road and overturned.

The Peterbilt, which was being operated by Phillip S. Hendrix, 49, of Wappapello, ran off the left side of the road.

Hendrix suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville, Mo., for treatment.

Brotherton, who was a passenger in the Peterbilt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Perry County Coroner Bill Bohnert.

Gawrych suffered minor injuries and also was taken to the Perryville hospital for treatment.
