A levee break Monday evening in southern Butler County is not impacting roads or houses, according to officials, who spent the weekend repairing extensive road damage related to heavy rains.
A section of the Black River levee broke near County Road 255, said highway superintendent Gary McDonald, who had not received any reports of roads or homes being impacted.
The section is located in the Coon Island Conservation Area, in Drainage District 7. Attempts to reach a representative of the drainage district were unsuccessful this morning.
Repairs will be done by the drainage district, after the river level drops, officials said.
The Black River reached minor flood stage, at 16.42 feet, Sunday morning, following a week of rainfall.
It had fallen to a little more than 10 feet, as of Tuesday morning.
More than 7 inches of rain fell at Poplar Bluff Municipal Airport between Monday and Sunday, the National Weather Service reported.
Some areas saw as much as 4 inches of rain in three hours on Saturday, McDonald said.
County roads were severely impacted by this.
"Just about every road in the western part of the county got hit pretty bad," McDonald said. "We had a full crew in Sunday and worked part of Saturday as well."
There were places with washouts that normally are not impacted, he said.
Crews are continuing to work on repairs.
