Area veterans were able to enjoy a holiday meal at home recently through the Care and Share Program operated by

John J. Pershing VA Medical Center and significant help from The Home Depot.

This effort provides ingredients and supplies for qualified veterans and their families, according to VA staff.

It is sponsored through community and staff donations.

This is the third year that The Home Depot has assisted with the program, volunteering to assist with package preparation and home deliveries, staff say.

The Home Depot also awarded Care and Share a grant in the amount of $4,800 this year to provide items for the packages such as paper towels, reusable bags, laundry detergent and wet wipes.

The store had 15 associates involved with packaging and distributing over the three-day period, said Specialty Assistant Store Manager Simon McGuckin.

"Our associates are truly amazing, to volunteer their time to give back, and we work for an amazing company," he said.

More than 225 veterans received this assistance during the 2017 holiday season, said VA Voluntary Service Assistant Dale Day.

Dr. Patricia Hall, medical center director, expressed appreciation on behalf of VA and the veterans.

"Our local Home Depot has been a staunch supporter of veteran needs, and we truly appreciate their partnership in helping those who have served," she said.
