Poplar Bluff city officials announced shortly before 8 a.m. today that a special meeting will be held Wednesday to discuss personnel and real estate matters.

The meeting will begin in open session at 6:30 p.m. and go into closed session following citizens' input. It will be held at the city council chambers in the Oak Street location of the former city hall.

The meeting comes after reports were released last week detailing issues at Northwest Medical Center.

The city is set to close on the property in February.

It would become home to city hall, the police department and city court. A proposal to move some Municipal Utilities employees into the building has also been raised, but was tabled Jan. 16 by council members.

City manager Mark Massingham was asked this morning if Northwest would be included in Wednesday's closed session discussion. He said the council has several items to discuss.

An appraisal shows the basement of Northwest, where police would be located, has a history of flooding. A building inspection also revealed an HVAC system that is failing and an aging roof, as well as other concerns.

Council members have said they are still in negotiations with the owners of the building. They indicated last week the council is divided on whether these issues should alter the city's intent to purchase the building.

Focus Bank is the majority owner of Northwest, which would be purchased for $3.495 million.

The city is in the process of securing up to $8 million for the purchase and renovations.

The only figures released by the council are renovation estimates of $5.595 million, compiled in June 2017 before building inspections were completed.
