James Mckendrick Johnson, 97, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. died Jan. 5, 2018. He was born June 15, 1920 in Paducah, Ky. to the union of Joe Johnson and Hellen Whitfield. James was an only child. James Mckendrick Johnson, 97, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. died Jan. 5, 2018.

He was born June 15, 1920 in Paducah, Ky. to the union of Joe Johnson and Hellen Whitfield. James was an only child. His mother passed when he was 3 years old and his Aunt Ruby Mae Broyles raised him. James accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and joined Central Church.

In 1938 at the age of 17, James enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was enrolled in the CCC Camp for two years. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Guinea S. Philippines. He worked at the John J. Pershing VA hospital for many years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, picking pecans and walnuts, and farming. His most favorite hobby was drawing.

James is survived by one daughter, Janis Shearrill (Edgar) from Westchester, Ill.; one son, Carl James from Poplar Bluff; six grandchildren, Latasha Pomerlee (Cody), DeShaun Shearill (Kasey), Derek Arrington, Monique Brown, Darrell Williams and Daryll Williams; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 at Fitch-Hillis funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will follow at noon. The Rev. Carl Williams will officiate. Burial will be at City Cemetery.
