No candidates have come forward more than one week into filing for two Poplar Bluff City Council seats.
Some officials believe this is the first time in decades that no candidate has signed up on the opening day of filings, let alone a week into the time frame.
Filing opened Dec. 12 for the Ward 4 spot currently held by Philip Crocker, and the Ward 2 position of Mayor Ed DeGaris.
Neither has signed up for re-election, however Crocker said Tuesday he does intend to seek a second term. DeGaris said, at this time, he does not plan to file again for the seat he has held since 2009.
Both declined to comment further on their decisions.
Filing will remain open until Jan. 16.
An election will be held April 3 for the terms, which are three years each.
Candidates must be 21 years old, a citizen of the United States and have lived in the ward they are seeking election to for one year.
Candidates cannot be in arrears on any tax lien, forfeiture or defalcation in office.
Filing can be done from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 16.
The position of mayor is chosen by a vote of city council members, following the election.
DeGaris also served as mayor in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
