Some may have recently noticed groups of friends scavenging around downtown Poplar Bluff, making strange requests and taking selfies.

This was all a part of the Downtown Scavenger Hunt held earlier this month and sponsored by The Bank of Missouri.

"I spoke with the girls from The Bank of Missouri about ways to promote downtown businesses for the Christmas season," Downtown Executive Director Jerrica Fox said. "We thought a scavenger hunt would be a fun activity for downtown."

During the scavenger hunt, Fox said she wanted teams to get out and visit and purchase items at downtown shops without disrupting business.

"We wanted to encourage teams to see downtown and help the merchants," Fox said.

The Downtown Scavenger Hunt was self paced and took place from Dec. 1 through 8.

Teams of no more than four were given a checklist with descriptions of downtown places. Once finding the location, the teams took photos for points. The team with the most points at the end of the week won a cash prize.

Examples of places for the teams to visit included "staircase that was renovated within the last few years," "a park for our furry friends," "in the business of saving soles" and more.

"We tried to include every business downtown," Fox said.

Bonus points were awarded for bringing back receipts from downtown business purchases, photos with firemen and the mayor as well as attending the Christmas parade or Rodgers Theatre movie.

After all the photos and points were tallied, Good Vibrations was named the winning team.

The Good Vibrations team included friends Julie Huggins, Tina Crow and Nicole Robinson, who have been residents of the area for years.

The ladies said they "just came up with the name" and carried around a giant, fabric heart to include in all their photos.

"We had a blast," Crow said. "We started the scavenger hunt early before work around 6:30 a.m. We were in it to win it!"

Huggins and Crow, who both work at the Post Office located downtown, said they still found new places in the area even after being downtown each day.

Team Good Vibrations was also excited to say they were the second customers to visit Fox Trot Coffee opening day.

The ladies said they have seen many places downtown they wanted to visit and this was the perfect opportunity.

"We were tearing down downtown," Huggins said. "We shopped it up while there and ate at Myrtles and Jim and Jerrys. It (the scavenger hunt) was a good way to get people downtown."
