Residents may not be familiar with the term Poplar Bluff Greenways, but the trails that make up this citywide network of walkways have become well known since the first park was dedicated 65 years ago.
These footpaths offer a way to log serious miles with the McLane Park to Shelby Road trail, a leisurely stroll through Ferguson Grove or child-friendly paths at Hendrickson Park that can be used year-round.
The goal is to link the various areas of the city through walkable paths, said Clark Allen, park department director.
It has been a longtime goal for the city that has made big strides in recent years, with the connection in 2016 between McLane and Shelby.
Using a mixture of trails, sidewalks and other public spaces, the city hopes to one day connect north and south, reaching Highway 53 through Shelby Road.
This same method ties the city cemetery at Gray Street to Maud Street, traveling through Hendrickson and Bacon parks.
"We want to create areas for people to use for walking, cycling and transportation," said Allen.
