BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Western Kentucky men's basketball assistant coach Ben Hansbrough has resigned in the wake of a weekend arrest.
Hansbrough left his post Monday "to pursue other opportunities," Zach Greenwell, WKU associate director of athletic media relations, confirmed to the Daily News.
Hansbrough was arrested Saturday night on a charge of driving under the influence.
Hansbrough's resignation leaves Marc Hsu and Nikita Johnson as the two full-time assistants on coach Rick Stansbury's staff heading into the 2017-18 season.
Hansbrough was elevated to a full-time assistant coaching role this summer after spending the past two seasons as a support staffer at WKU.
He played for Stansbury at Mississippi State from 2006-08 before transferring to Notre Dame, where he became the Big East Conference Player of the Year.
Hansbrough, 29, was processed through the Warren County Jail at 8:43 p.m. Saturday and released at 4:16 a.m. Sunday. Bond was set at $1,000.
Bowling Green police responded at 7:22 p.m. Saturday night to the parking lot of El Mazatlan, 2435 Nashville Road, for a report of a collision involving Hansbrough's vehicle and another vehicle.
The driver of the other vehicle informed an officer that he smelled alcohol on Hansbrough.
Hansbrough was asked if he'd had anything to drink Saturday night, and said he hadn't since Friday night. He went through field sobriety tests and "showed indicators," per a police report.
Hansbrough was arrested at 8:01 p.m., at which point an officer said he smelled "a strong odor of alcoholic beverage" on Hansbrough's person. He was taken to the Warren County Jail, where he refused to submit to a breath test.
Hansbrough becomes the fourth WKU full-time assistant coach to vacate his post since the 2016-17 season ended.
Chris Cheeks, Quannas White and Shammond Williams, all assistants on the 2016-17 staff, left this past offseason.
WKU is working through its third full week of preseason practices as the 2017-18 season approaches. The Tops will open Nov. 1 with an exhibition game against NAIA school Campbellsville, with the first regular season game scheduled for Nov. 10 at home against Missouri State.
Ben Hansbrough graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 2007, second all-time in career points with 1,577 behind older brother Tyler Hansbrough, who starts his first season playing in China with the Guangzhou Long-Lions on Sunday.
