CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- A Poplar Bluff, Mo., man recently was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.

Jonathan Ryan Snyder was sentenced to 51 months in prison last week by U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr. after he earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography, according to a clerk with the U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau.

Upon Snyder's release from prison, he reportedly will be placed on a 10-year period of supervised release.

Snyder was arrested Aug. 24, 2016, on a federal indictment, which stemmed from an investigation by detectives with the Southeast Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force at the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

On Jan. 14, 2016, according to a news release from police Detective Danny Hicks, a cyber tip was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reporting a Tumblr user had uploaded several images of confirmed child pornography to his account.

Tumblr, Hicks explained, is a social-media website, which allows users to "put pictures from pretty much anywhere" on it.

"It's kind of like a blog format (which is) geared toward a particular interest," such as a certain car or in this case, child pornography, Hicks said. "(Users) can find what they're looking for, what everyone is posting."

The Tumblr account holder, Hicks said, was identified as belonging to Snyder, 27.

Five days after receiving the tip, Hicks said, officers with the cyber crimes task and police department executed a search warrant on Snyder's residence in the 2000 block of Kentucky Avenue.

"Digital items were seized and forensic examinations were performed at the Southeast Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force laboratory," said Hicks. "During the examinations, several thousand images and videos of confirmed child pornography were discovered on Snyder's electronic devices."

Those devices, Hicks said, included a laptop computer, external hard drive and cellphone.

"Child porn was found on all three items," said Hicks, who indicated Snyder had uploaded 11 images to his Tumblr account, which is "how we caught on to it."
