A report of a domestic disturbance involving a hammer Thursday afternoon sent a Poplar Bluff, Mo., couple to jail and their four young grandchildren back into state custody.
Arrested were Daniel Joseph Lindman, 30, and his 44-year-old wife, Kasandra M. Lindman.
Poplar Bluff police officers were called to the Lindmans' home in the 1300 block of North Main Street before 4 p.m.
"Upon arrival, I was contacted by Daniel Lindman (who) stated his wife, Kasandra Lindman, had left prior to my arrival, and she had four children with her," Cpl. Shonna Grobe wrote in her report.
Daniel Lindman, Grobe said, invited herself and Sgt. Joe Ward into the home to view an interior bedroom door, which had been "damaged by Kasandra using a hammer."
Grobe said Daniel Lindman reported he and his wife had a verbal argument, which "escalated into Kasandra grabbing a hammer and swinging it at him.
"(He) stated he was able to slam the bedroom door that was positioned in between them ... (the door) got the brunt of the strike with the hammer."
Daniel Lindman did not sustain any injuries; however, he would have had the door not been positioned where it was, Grobe said.
While in the home, Grobe said, she and Ward smelled what she described as a strong odor of burnt and fresh marijuana.
"I also observed the house to be in complete disarray and very unsanitary," Grobe said.
Due to the condition of the house and the fact four small children, ages 9, 7, 3 and 9 months, lived in the home, Grobe said, she requested the Missouri Children's Division send someone to the home.
Upon the arrival of the Children's Division investigators, Grobe said, she learned the children already were in the state custody; however, they had been placed with their grandparents, the Lindmans.
A short time later, Grobe said, Patrolman Zach Tubb found Kasandra Lindman and the children walking on Davis Street near 12th Street.
Grobe said she went to that location and all five were brought back to the home, where Kasandra Lindman was arrested and the children were released to the state investigators.
Daniel Lindman also was arrested after Ward investigated the alleged marijuana odor inside the home.
Daniel Lindman, according to Ward's report, retrieved what he described as a "one hitter pipe with a marijuana cigarette" from a bedroom.
"As Daniel retrieved the one hitter, I could see another metal smoking pipe lying on top of the bathroom sink," said Ward, who indicated he also saw a glass smoking pipe, three plastic corner Baggies with residue and snorting straw in the bathroom.
Ward said he field tested the residue in one of the bags, and it tested positive for methamphetamine.
After being handcuffed, Tubb reportedly did a search of Daniel Lindman's person.
"I felt what I immediately recognized as a 'bubbler' (glass smoking pipe)" in one of the man's pants' pockets, Tubb wrote in his report. The item, he, said, was wrapped in a sock.
Daniel Lindman was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Kasandra Lindman was arrested on suspicion of second-degree domestic assault, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Lindmans were booked at the Butler County jail.
