The rain last week made the road to the Park Department Junior League Tournament title tougher for Marble Slab and Mossy Oak-Slama.
Marble Slab, which upset regular-season champion Sunset Pools in the semifinal Wednesday, didn't have its ace pitcher when the final was postponed by rain.
Mossy Oak had to play its postponed semifinal Monday night at McLane Park then took off some pressure with a 12-run first inning to beat Marble Slab 16-0 for the title.
"We got on base, took the extra base, ran on the passed balls," Mossy Oak coach Lance Inman said. "We did the fundamentals of softball."
Rachel Rommel struck out eight and walked two for a no-hitter in the circle and was 2 for 2 with a walk, scoring twice. Her grand slam in the third inning set the final score.
"That was phenomenal," Coach Inman said.
"We've had a great season, she's pitched wonderful. Very happy with her."
Mossy Oak gave Rommel a big lead before even taking the field by sending 17 batters to the plate.
McKenna Monaghan started the game with a walk before Kimber Hick's single. Following another walk by Tytin Inman, Rommel, Diamond Coleman, Felicity Corum and Lily Stroup each had hits. Diamond Weaver followed up three straight walks with a hit before Marble Slab recorded an out.
Mossy Oak loaded the bases with two outs before Marble Slab's Haylee Chandler ended the inning with a strikeout, one of four.
Marble Slab's regular starting pitcher, Micha Burton, was on a family vacation.
"We went ahead and swung the bats, got a few key hits, kept the pressure on the pitcher," Coach Inman said. "We ran the girls."
After a scoreless second inning, Monaghan and Hick had consecutive one-out hits before a walk to Inman loaded the bases for Rommel, who plugged the left-field gap and circled the bases.
Monaghan had three hits in the semifinal, an 18-0 win over KK Construction, with a double and triple. Rommel had two hits, including a triple, along with Coleman's two singles. Rommel struck out nine, walked five and didn't allow a hit in three innings.
"Our girls listened, they practiced hard," Coach Inman said. "When it became tournament time they knew the pressure needed to be on, they did great."
Katie Durbin and Macie Robertson drew walks in the final for Marble Slab, which didn't get a runner into scoring position.
