A Poplar Bluff, Mo., man may face charges after admitting he allegedly had sexual intercourse with an underage girl earlier this week.
The Poplar Bluff Police Department learned of the alleged abuse at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Poplar Bluff woman, who authorities describe as the former stepgrandmother of the 13-year-old girl, called officers to her Avondale home.
The woman reported she had "learned throughout the day" that the teen allegedly had sex with Micheal Earl Bailey, 19, while she was in a bedroom at her home, according to police Sgt. Joe Ward's report.
The woman further reported she had "confronted Micheal about the incident; Micheal admitted to her about having sex" with the teen, said Ward, who was shown text message between the woman and Bailey regarding the alleged incident.
Ward said he also was told the teen was at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center with her mother.
Contact was made with officer Joey Woodruff, who responded to the hospital to contact the teen and her mother, said Ward, who seized bedding and the teen's clothing.
Woodruff, according to Lt. Josh Stewart, contacted the teen, who "admitted to having sex with the suspect."
The alleged sexual assault, he said, had occurred during Tuesday night.
Bailey, he said, later was contacted at his residence in the 2000 block of Arkansas Avenue and transported to the police department for an interview.
"During the interview, he admitted to the allegations and was placed under arrest," Stewart said.
Bailey subsequently was booked at the Butler County jail on suspicion of first-degree statutory rape.
Woodruff described Bailey as a friend of the family.
Both Bailey and the teen, Woodruff said, had been visiting the teen's cousin, who lived at the home and was in another room when the alleged assault took place.
"The girl had been there for a couple of days visiting; then, he came over that day," Woodruff said.
