Sidewalk improvements on a long stretch of Pine Street and a portion of Westwood Boulevard will begin after July 4 in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The work could take until Dec. 15 to complete, although contractors hope to finish sooner, said Dereck Drury, president of CE Contracting.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has awarded an approximately $1.2 million contract to the Ste. Genevieve, Mo., company for the project, which will also include work in Caruthersville and Campbell.
Schedules for the work were set in May, during a pre-construction meeting with MoDOT.
Work began in Caruthersville in May, with Campbell to be done between June 12-30.
"This schedule is flexible and weather dependent," said MoDOT area engineer David Wyman.
The bulk of the money will be spent in Poplar Bluff.
Sidewalks will be replaced along a 1-mile section of Pine, from 10th Street to the Black River. The work will take place on both sides of the street.
A section of Westwood Boulevard has also been included. Sidewalks will be replaced from approximately Maya's Mexican Restaurant to the Cherry Street intersection at Wal-Mart Supercenter. The work will be done on the east side of Westwood and may include a new section to connect existing sidewalks.
The projects are part of a state-wide effort to improve accessibility under the highway department's Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan. Similar projects also have been completed in Gideon, Malden, Holcomb and Kennett.
