Tyler Ison is following in his brother's footsteps and joining him on the hardwood once again.
The Malden senior recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Hannibal-LaGrange Universtiy where his older brother, Trevor, has played for the last year.
"I'm really glad I get to go play with him again because not many people get to say that they played with their brother in high school and college," Ison said. "He can kind of lead me in the right direction and I'll have somebody there I can grow with."
Ison, who was one of eight signed by the Trojans, had a tough decision to make while looking at a few other schools. A trip to Hannibal, Missouri for an official visit this winter made his choice easier.
"The way Hannibal did things and treated me while I was there really did it for me," Ison said. "I had gone for a couple other visits and this one just felt like home."
Ison started and played guard for the Green Wave, who finished 17-9 this past season. As a senior he averaged 14.6 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. He was selected to the Bootheel All-Conference Team and the Bloomfield Christmas All-Tournament team.
"We are all very proud of the work and commitment Tyler has put forth and wish him the best," Malden coach Andrew Halford said.
He'll join a Hannibal-LaGrange team that went 8-18 under 12th-year coach Jason Durst, who's excited to see the chemistry between the Ison brothers.
"I think they'll play well together. They're a little bit night and day but we need all kinds of different personalities on the team," Durst said. "I think that goes right into what we're trying to build. We're a family."
Durst said he expects to have Ison play the same role from the guard position as he did for the Green Wave.
"We are excited to add Tyler to our 2017 recruiting class," Durst said. "His accomplishments in high school show that he has the work ethic, dedication and abilities needed to be a successful student-athlete in our program."
Ison is up for playing wherever he's needed but will likely stay at the same guard position he did for the Green Wave.
"I'll be like anybody else, having to work my way and earn my time on the floor," Ison said. "Coach said I'll play one of the two guard spots and now it's just about me showing the team that I deserve to be out there."
Ison has big plans outside of basketball. A member of the National Beta Club at Malden, Ison has enrolled in business classes where he hopes to get a degree in business administration.
But first comes the adjustment of playing at the college level and resuming the chemistry on the court with his brother.
"I'm just excited to play with him again," Ison said. "Me and Trevor have been playing with each other forever so it's going be nice to keep that going."
